Science is a big topic, and it’s one that some students will understand right away, while others may need a little more work to grasp the material.
There are many reasons why using grade 7 modified science lessons in the classroom makes sense. This blog post will cover those reasons and share some resources that will help grade 7 science teachers.
Four Reasons to Use Grade 7 Modified Science Lessons in the Classroom

1. They provide accessible content for students working below-grade level that meets them where they are.
It can be frustrating for teachers and students when the students are not provided with the tools they need to succeed. That includes having the right kind of lessons tailored to their specific needs.
When it comes to a topic like science, using grade 7 modified science lessons in the classroom can help your students working at below-grade level to access the material in a way that works best for them.
That includes students on an IEP, as well as ELL students. Modified lessons are created with significantly reduced reading and writing expectations. They also have reinforcement activities with more guided tools and many visual and graphic elements.
All of these are meant to help students better comprehend the material. When students are able to feel successful at learning, it helps them build confidence in themselves and their comprehension, and that can spill over in a positive way to other academic pursuits.

2. Modified lessons are a tool that can be used for all students.
When teachers think of Grade 7 modified science lessons, there may be a perception that they are only for students working below-grade level. While this is the intended audience, modified lessons, like the ones in this Grade 7 Modified Science Bundle, can be used with any student in the class.
A topic like science can be tough. There are many facets to the material, and while some students might do well with one topic, it’s possible they could struggle with another topic in the same unit.
This is where grade 7 modified science lessons can be helpful for students and teachers. By having each modified lesson on hand, teachers have a go-to resource that they can use when needed for any topic in a particular unit.
Students who may be struggling with one or two specific parts of the unit can use the modified material to help them gain a better understanding of what is being taught. Sometimes, just providing students with a more basic format of a topic can spark the understanding needed to move back to working at grade-level material.
Using modified lessons, when needed, with any student, also reinforces the fact to the classroom that everyone learns in different ways and there should be no judgment because of the use of modified materials.

3. Modified lessons are a teacher time-saver, while benefiting students who may need help the most.
There are many demands on a teacher’s time during the day, and it can be difficult to create the kind of differentiated instruction that is so important in the classroom.
By using specifically designed grade 7 modified science lessons with students, teachers will know they have a resource they can turn to when they need it. They will not have to rethink and modify each lesson on a particular topic, but can instead pick and choose from pre-made lessons.
This allows teachers the flexibility to see what will work for their classroom and take the time to think about the different topics and methods in which the material is being presented. Rather than spending time trying to create modified lesson plans, teachers can save time and know their students have the tools they need.

4. Using modified lessons that align with regular grade lessons presents more opportunities for class cohesion.
All 2 Peas and a Dog modified lessons are designed to align as closely as possible with the regular grade level lessons. This has a couple of benefits for students and teachers.
First, it allows those using grade 7 modified science lessons to stay on topic with the rest of the class. It can be difficult when students working below grade level are using material that is very different from that of their peers. Not only can it be isolating, but it can be more difficult for the teacher to manage since the way the topic is presented may be in vastly different approaches.
Secondly, using grade 7 modified science lessons along with the regular unit, like this Grade 7 Science Bundle, can create more space for teachers to find overlap. By using lessons that align as closely as possible, teachers can seek out more opportunities for shared activities and discussion. This helps build classroom cohesion and can get everyone working as a team.
One activity that I love for classroom team-building is digital escape rooms. Since all students must work collaboratively to solve puzzles to escape from a digital space, everyone’s input is needed. These are great for showing all students that their contribution is valued.
