How Students Can Benefit From Using Modified Grade 8 Science Lessons in the Classroom

Teachers know that each student learns in their own way. Some may need to have information presented in a more visual format, while others do well with written texts. One is not superior to the other, but it is important that teachers consider the range of resources they need to fully meet the needs of their classroom.

One instance where students may need specialized resources is when they are working below grade level. This can include students on an IEP and ELL students.

For these students, using a Modified Grade 8 Science Unit can be a fantastic way to help them access the material in a way that best meets their needs. It provides something valuable for the student and helps the teacher create differentiated instruction.

The Value of Modified Grade 8 Science Units in the Classroom

Modified units are specially designed with reduced reading and writing expectations to make the material more accessible to students who are working below grade level. They generally contain graphics and larger visuals, as well as guided tools for helping students complete the required activities.

The goal is to help students succeed, and Modified Grade 8 Science lessons can do just that. I want students to understand difficult scientific concepts and feel confident in their ability to learn and process new information. That is why I create my units not only with the curriculum in mind, but also with student success.

It is so important for every student, but especially for students who may struggle, that they feel valued and accomplished. Frustration with the material has no beneficial outcome for anyone.

That’s why my modified science lessons, like those found in this Modified Grade 8 Science Bundle, are brought back to basics. They use simple language, guided activities, and explain concepts in a way that will generally make it much easier for your below-grade learners to understand.

A Valuable Resource for All Students

Modified resources are great to have on hand for several reasons. First, they are an excellent go-to resource that teachers can access year after year with each new group of students.

They also provide a variety of lesson plans and ideas that will help create a classroom with differentiated learning, while preserving that precious resource of teacher time. Since these Modified Grade 8 Science lessons are already done, teachers can simply choose what works best for them and their students without additional lesson creation.

Finally, modified lessons can be a great resource for all students in the classroom. Although specifically designed to address the needs of students working below grade level, modified lessons can be used with any student, at any time.

There are instances where students working at grade level may struggle with a topic or concept. Having a modified lesson on hand that explains the concept in a very plain way can be a useful tool in helping them with the material.

Another added benefit of using Modified Grade 8 Science lessons is that it reinforces to students that the exact type of learning material is not important. Everyone learns differently, and we may all use different resources at different times. What is important is that everyone is learning and feeling valued.

Ways to Find Overlap in the Classroom

It can be difficult when one group of students is working on material at grade level and another group is working on an entirely different set of materials below grade level. Teachers must find a way to balance the needs of all students while still finding ways to promote inclusion in the classroom.

All 2 Peas and a Dog modified lessons are created with this in mind. I know how important it is to have every student feel successful and included. With all 2 Peas and a Dog modified units, including Modified Grade 8 Science lessons, the material is aligned as much as possible with the regular grade unit.

This benefits students because they are all learning the same general concepts and similar material. No one needs to feel excluded because the work they have been given is vastly different from that of their classmates.

And this benefits teachers because it makes it much easier to find ways to overlap lessons, discussion and activities in the classroom. Bringing all levels of learners together is so important, and when using modified and regular units in a paired way, teachers can find greater opportunities to make that happen.

One of the best activities I find for bringing students together is digital escape rooms. Students love taking the time to collaborate and solve puzzles to free themselves from their digital space.

My digital escape rooms are meant to be used in groups and encourage collaboration and teamwork, regardless of the learning level of a student.

Your students will love this Forensic Science Digital Escape Room, this Grade 8 Cells Digital Escape Room, and this Grade 8 Fluids Digital Escape Room.

When it comes to long-range planning, I’ve also created these free and easy-to-use Grade 8 Long Range Plans to make planning your school year easier.
