Let’s be honest, it can sometimes feel like there just isn’t enough time to get everything done in the classroom in a day. Regular responsibilities, instruction, and preparation can feel like a lot and leave little time for other things we need to do.
One of the tasks that is so important, but that can sometimes be a challenge to create ahead of time, is differentiated lessons. Once you have already prepped the material for the regular unit, it can be time-consuming to go back and modify activities and concepts for students who need it, including those working below grade level.
That is where prepared, modified lessons, like these Modified Grade 8 Geography Lessons, can be so valuable in the classroom.
Meeting the Needs of All Students
Each student learns differently, and as teachers, we all want to accommodate their needs and do the best we can for them to process the material. Using Modified Grade 8 Geography Lessons can be beneficial for students working below grade level, those on a modified IEP, and ELL students.
In this case, the Grade 8 Geography Bundle forms the basis for the modified lessons, and the design significantly reduces reading and writing expectations.
These lessons introduce concepts such as population density, human settlement, and economic systems in ways that are much more accessible for the modified learner. Each lesson is based on material from the regular unit, making it easier for students to maintain a cohesive learning environment while also helping teachers find opportunities for parallel instruction.
By pairing the modified and regular units, teachers can look for chances for shared discussion and activities. For some complex topics, a teacher may decide the modified unit is appropriate for the entire class, providing an introduction to new material and laying the groundwork for further learning.
Teachers can use modified lessons for more than just students working below grade level. They can be a valuable tool for any student who may be struggling with a particular topic or lesson in the unit.
Using Modified Grade 8 Geography Lessons with all students in some capacity can also make modified material more acceptable as a general class practice, which emphasizes the concept and comprehension, not on “what level” a particular student is at.
Difficult Concepts Made Easier
Geography encompasses a lot of new concepts for students to learn. For those working below grade level, a topic like human settlement may feel daunting. By using Modified Grade 8 Geography Lessons, students will be able to understand these significant concepts better and lay a firm foundation for further learning.
Modified lessons use a variety of simplified activities, such as cut and paste, sort and match and Mandala colouring activities, to reinforce the material in a way that is more accessible to those working below grade level. Providing students with material in a way that is easier for them to understand can help build their confidence in each topic and hopefully prompt further inquisition.
Students working below grade level using Modified Grade 8 Geography Lessons can use material similar to the rest of the class, and are hopefully able to comprehend better the material taught, which helps with classroom inclusion and can reduce any stigma that may be associated with using modified materials.
All Students Working Together
In my classroom, I like to have students working below grade level and those working at grade level come together for lessons and activities when possible. It’s essential for building unity in the classroom and conveys the message to students that everyone’s voice and input are valued, and we all have something to contribute.
For this reason, working with Modified Grade 8 Geography Lessons and the regular unit lessons can be so helpful. Since the content is similar, it provides more opportunities for classroom integration and for students to work together, or at least, share similar experiences when it comes to the material.
Another activity that is great for bringing students together is digital escape rooms. Since they are on a variety of topics and require different kinds of knowledge to crack each code, students need to work collaboratively to succeed in their mission. When it comes to solving a puzzle, everyone has a chance of having the information that is required, no matter whether they are working below grade or not.
Some digital escape rooms your students are sure to love include this Canada-Themed Digital Escape Room, this Forensic Science Digital Escape Room, and this Earth Day Digital Escape Room.
