Differentiating Science Instruction Using Modified Resources

Learn how differentiating science instruction with modified resources can help your students be successful.

Differentiating science instruction is essential in today’s classrooms as students have various learning needs, styles and abilities. In this blog post, 10 Ways To Make Science Class Engaging and Fun For Students, teachers can learn how to make any science classroom more engaging.

This blog post will specifically focus on differentiating science instruction using modified resources. These modifications are for students working significantly below grade level and requiring different lesson formats and accommodations to access the text.

Understanding Differentiated Instruction

Understanding Differentiated Instruction

Differentiated instruction is a way of lesson planning that changes how the content is taught and assessed based on the needs of the students in your classroom. For example, one class might need reduced text reading passages with true or false questions; other classes might be better suited to watch a video about the topic and write a paragraph response.

When creating lessons, think about how students will learn the material (such as readings, videos, hands-on activities, demonstrations, etc.) and how they will be assessed on their understanding of the material.

The Benefits of Differentiating Science Instruction

Benefits of Differentiating Science Instruction

There are benefits to differentiating science instruction.

It gives students variety in how they display their knowledge.

Students will have the opportunity to show their understanding of the material in various ways. Not every lesson needs a formal quiz, test, or essay to demonstrate learning. Class discussions, true or false questions, or short journal reflections might achieve the same results.

For more details on different assessment styles, including formal and informal assessment, read this blog post: Tips and Tricks to Help You Improve Your Assessment Skills.

It helps to increase student comprehension.

When students have access to simplified texts and assessments, they can understand the material being taught because it is at a level accessible to them.

It increases student engagement.

Students who struggle with regular lesson content can become disengaged. By providing lessons that meet the needs of these students, they can feel successful, leading to more engagement in science class.

It helps to increase confidence in students.

By differentiating science instruction for students, students can work at a level and pace that works for them. They can gain confidence in their academic skills instead of feeling overwhelmed by the lesson’s content.

Strategies For Differentiating Science Instruction

Strategies For Differentiating Science Instruction

It is important when lesson planning to add variety to how students learn the content. Here are some differentiated science instruction strategies you can add to your science lessons:

Use Anchor Charts and Graphic Organizers

Present information in a more visual format instead of a list of questions to be answered.

Reduce Written Output

Provide lesson follow-up activities that are not solely based on extensive written output. Students can demonstrate their knowledge and understanding through multiple choice, true or false or short answer questions.

Provide Lesson Variety

Use reduced text reading passages, audio files, videos, anchor charts, picture books, technology, projects, hands-on labs, and short quizzes and tests to help students learn the material. Check out 18 Effective Teaching Strategies for more ideas on providing lesson variety.

Provide Reading Support

Help students achieve success by supporting the reading requirements of your science lessons. Students could use MP3 audio files or text-to-speech software to help access the texts. Try to provide modified texts where the main ideas are conveyed using simplified language.

Structured Labs and Assignments

Students who require modified content can benefit from a step-by-step approach to large tasks. If the rest of the class participates in a hands-on lab, have the modified students participate, but their lab report requirements can differ from the rest of the class.

If you are differentiating science instruction for research projects, provide the research for the modified students so that they do not spend all their time trying to find books or websites written at a level accessible to them. For example, if you want students to complete a slide show based on their research, tell them what information is required on each slide. This gives the students confidence that they will meet the assignment requirements.

When you scaffold students’ learning, it provides them with opportunities to demonstrate academic success.

Be Flexible With Student Groupings

It’s important not to always group modified students together or have them work on entirely different topics from the rest of the class. Look for opportunities within your lesson for all students to work together, even if it’s just for a short time.

Student Choice and Voice

With differentiating science instruction, all learners should be able to actively participate in their learning by being provided with choices and opportunities to share their thinking. When planning out your lessons, build in opportunities for student choice.

This could be their research topic, the format in which they present their learning, or who they get to work with. When students can take control of their learning, they are often more engaged in the task.

Regular Assessment of Learning

Students benefit from regular feedback on their learning. Build in short assessments throughout your science units to understand where the class is at and see what concepts need to be retaught. You can use entrance and exit tickets, quizzes, tests, reflection questions, assignments, projects or class discussions to assess your students and provide feedback.
