Below is a list of great free and paid resources to help teachers find interesting articles to support their article of the week program in their classroom. Bookmark this list as it contains a wide variety of both free and paid article of the week resources.

  • Purpose/Function of Education Tool: Instructional materials to aid with reading comprehension with a library of nonfiction and literary articles.
  • Cost:  Free. 

 

  • Educational Tool Name: CommonLit
  • Purpose/Function of Education Tool: A variety of articles at different reading levels that can be used as the primary text or paired texts. 
  • Cost: Free. 

 

  • Educational Tool Name: Newsela
  • Purpose/Function of Education Tool: With a library of news sources, engaging reading comprehension, and then assessments with quizzes and prompts. 
  • Cost: Free and Paid options. 

 

  • Educational Tool Name: The Learning Network
  • Purpose/Function of Education Tool: A library of articles specifically for students to keep up with and be assessed on weekly news. Comes with lesson plans, writing prompts, and questions to match articles.

  • Purpose/Function of Education Tool: Daily news articles available with quizzes and other assessment tools according to what applies to your grade level.

  • Purpose/Function of Education Tool: Unbiased, reliable articles/videos for a variety of topics for how things work in easy, understandable explanations.

  • Purpose/Function of Education Tool: A variety of articles/guides for how-to’s and hacks mostly consisting of technology and lifestyle subjects. 
  • Cost: Free. 

 

  • Educational Tool Name: This I Believe
  • Purpose/Function of Education Tool: A project that aims to engage people in writing with a huge collection of essays to choose from, all about life, beliefs, and morals. Reading programs, as well as personal essay writing assignments for the classroom. 
  • Cost: Free. 

 

  • Educational Tool Name: National Geographic Kids
  • Purpose/Function of Education Tool: Online magazine for kids, including videos, games, a library of animals, and information surrounding them for increased learning of wildlife. 
  • Cost: Free and Paid options. 

 

  • Educational Tool Name: Time For Kids
  • Purpose/Function of Education Tool: Weekly magazine, with TIME content, but specifically for elementary school learning. Articles to get students engaged with journalism and heighten literacy.
